IQ Surfer, a fun and engaging internet search game, began in 2005 after its designers realized the enthusiasm their test game generated among friends and family. The game consists of a series of questions known as quests in which participants are encouraged to search the internet for answers.
The idea sounded a little like “Nerds meet the Amazing Race” yet people were playing and sending positive feedback. Team IQSurfer was formed and the first mission was to establish a website that could handle multiple users. This meant months/ years of time and dedication from the webmaster and the rest of the team due to “keeping the day job”. Hence, the second mission to generate cash flow. This became a two part equation. While money was needed for operational purposes, the Team felt strongly about social/community based issues. What if they could initiate money for operations as well as local non-profit organizations? Originally, Team IQS thought to make the site fee based with a cash prize for the winner of each quest. This posed many problems such as players not wanting to register and the high probability of cheating, which meant more overhead. Quest Creators were brought on and an inventory of quests were established.
Due to the problems associated with a cash prize site we were not generating any income. Something needed to change.
IQ SURFER makes money through advertising and quest sponsorship. Companies will only advertise and sponsor quests if we have good traffic numbers.
Does it work? It should. We don’t know. Our first goal is to get the traffic numbers and then we will approach companies.
HOW CAN I HELP?
We're glad you asked! Our goal is to continue to provide you with entertaining challenges and to initiate innovative ways to support non-profit organizations, but we can't do it without your help. If you like what we're doing, please take a moment to spread the word about IQ Surfer.
We're thrilled with how well IQ Surfer was received right off the bat, but we're not sitting still. We will continue to add and improve features on the site in the months and years ahead.
Please contact Kip Guerrero if you have any questions or comments, or post it here on our blog.
